### How to get a refund of excess TDS paid?

1. **Excess TDS Payment Scenario:**
If you have paid excess TDS (e.g., paid Rs. 2,00,000 instead of Rs. 20,000), the excess amount will remain as a credit in your account with the Income Tax Department.

2. **Refund Application through Form 26B:**
You need to apply for a refund of the excess TDS amount using **Form 26B**, which is available on the **TRACES portal** (TDS Reconciliation Analysis and Correction Enabling System).

* Log in to TRACES ([https://www.tdscpc.gov.in/app/login.xhtml](https://www.tdscpc.gov.in/app/login.xhtml)) with your credentials.
* Navigate to **‘Request for Refund’** and fill Form 26B online.
* Submit the form to initiate the refund process.

3. **Supporting Documents:**
Generally, the refund process doesn’t require physical documents but keep your payment challan, TDS certificates (Form 16A or 16B), and bank details handy.

4. **Refund Processing Time:**
The refund processing time depends on the Income Tax Department’s processing speed, but it typically takes **1 to 3 months** after your application is accepted. You can track the refund status on the TRACES portal.

5. **Verification and Adjustment:**

* The IT department will verify your claim and if everything is in order, they will process the refund.
* If the excess TDS is adjusted against any tax dues or demands, the refund amount may be adjusted accordingly.
