14 July 2010 There is no specific procedure defined (as far as my knowledge is concerned) so i have inquired about the procedure on phone from pan help line by income tax department and according to them

It is not necessary to surrender the pan at all and even then if you want to surrender the Pan ,then you should apply on the simple paper to concerned Income Tax officer(ITO) to cancel the pan card with death certificate / firm windingup details and pan card .So by this method you can cancel pan in death / firm closing case.
