Rectification of income tax return

my friend filed his salary return thru his co. software in that he input net salary twice (8.4 lacs instead of 4.2) now he received notice from dept for tax payment plz let me know the process for filing rectification request

File revised return. No rectification request can be sought for this mistake.

it was for FY 2012-13 & i think we can not filed revised return. any other solution
