What is the Unique Code Number (UCN)? The UCN is a registration number allotted by the RBI to Chartered Accountant firms that apply to be considered for appointments such as: Concurrent Audits Statutory Central/Branch Audits Stock Audits, etc. This code is required by banks when they ask for RBI-empanelled firms during auditor appointments.
📌 How to Get the UCN (Registration Process) No Direct Registration with RBI: CA Firms do not apply directly to the RBI. Instead, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) manages the panel and forwards it to RBI every year. Apply Through ICAI: ICAI issues an online form (usually around January–February each year) for: Empanelment of CA firms for bank audits. The application is made via: 👉 https://www.meficai.org MEF (Multipurpose Empanelment Form): Submit this form during the application window. Details like number of partners, experience, past audit assignments, etc., are submitted. After ICAI verifies, it sends the final list to RBI, which then issues UCNs. Timing & Deadlines: If you registered your firm in February 2011, you would have missed the deadline for the 2010–11 cycle. You should apply in the next cycle (likely Jan–Feb 2012 at that time). 📄 Documents Typically Needed Firm Constitution Certificate (ICAI) Copy of PAN Details of Partners Audit Experience Details Digital Signature (for ICAI portal) 🧾 Where to Check UCN (if already allotted) If your firm already applied via MEF and ICAI forwarded your name, you can check your UCN on: 👉 https://www.meficai.org
🟨 Important Note As of today, the RBI does not maintain a public portal for direct UCN applications or for checking UCNs. It’s all handled via ICAI’s MEF process
