Difference between gross margin and cost of sales

What is the difference between Gross Margin and Cost of sales (Goods sold).

Can Cost of Sales be a negative value, if so what will be the reasons for the same.

Is Below Cost of Sales correct:

Opening Stock
Add purchases
Add expenses
Less Closing Stock.
