16 September 2010 There is no direct penalty if u fail to file return untill 31-03-2011 for AY 2010-11. After that date there may be a direct penalty of Rs 5000 depending upon demand by the AO.

In case you fail to file the return by 30-09-2010 there is indirect penalty by way of interest liability in case your taxes are not paid fully, which is to be deposited by u before filing the return at your own.
