dear sir/mam,
i have collected service tax for the year 2006-07 but not paid because my receipts were within the exemption limit.can the department recover the tax now? if yes then what are the consequences?

Yes, the department has every right to recover the same. The simple principle of TAX is that...if you collect something in the name of Govt, it should go to Govt whether legitimately you are liable to pay or NOT.

you have to pay intt. on service tax and alos you have to penalize with fine
up to 6 month 18%
6 month to one year 24%
above 1 years 30% intt will be paid by u for delay period.
