09 August 2024 When an individual applies for a PAN (Permanent Account Number) and is adopted, there are specific procedures for mentioning the name and details on the PAN application form. The PAN application process accounts for various personal and familial situations, including adoption. Here’s how the process generally works:

### **1. PAN Application for Adopted Child:**

When applying for a PAN for an adopted child, especially in cases where the biological parent's details are not available, the following guidelines typically apply:

#### **Name and Details on the PAN Card:**

- **Name of the Adopted Child:** The name of the adopted child should be mentioned as it is in official documents or the adoption decree. This name will appear on the PAN card.

- **Name of the Adoptive Parent(s):** The adoptive parent's name(s) will be mentioned as the guardian or parent in the application form. In the case of a single adoptive parent (like Sushmita Sen in your example), their name will be included.

- **Father's Name Field:** If the biological father's name is not available or not applicable (e.g., in the case of an adopted child), this field can either be left blank or mentioned as “Not Available” or “Not Applicable,” depending on the application requirements and instructions provided by the PAN issuing authority.

#### **Required Documents:**

1. **Adoption Decree or Legal Adoption Papers:** The adoption decree or a legal document confirming the adoption should be submitted as proof.

2. **Proof of Identity and Address:** The adoptive parent’s documents for proof of identity and address will also be required.

3. **Proof of Date of Birth:** A birth certificate or any other legal document confirming the child's date of birth.

### **2. Example Case (Sushmita Sen):**

In the case of a high-profile individual like Sushmita Sen adopting a child, the PAN application process would follow these steps:

- **Name on PAN Card:** The adopted child's name, as per the adoption decree or relevant legal documents, will be on the PAN card.

- **Adoptive Parent's Details:** Sushmita Sen’s name would be mentioned as the parent or guardian on the application form.

- **Father’s Name:** Since the biological father’s details are not available or not applicable, the PAN application would follow the standard procedure for such cases, potentially leaving the father's name field blank or stating “Not Available.”

### **3. Application Procedure:**

- **Fill out the PAN Application Form:** Complete the PAN application form (Form 49A for Indian residents) with the adopted child's name and the adoptive parent's details.

- **Submit Required Documents:** Provide the adoption decree, proof of identity, address, and date of birth.

- **Submit Application to PAN Agency:** Submit the completed application and documents to the PAN service center or through the online PAN application portal.

### **Summary:**

For an adopted child applying for a PAN, the child’s name as per the adoption documents will appear on the PAN card. The adoptive parent’s name will be included in the parent or guardian section. If the biological father's details are not applicable, that field may be left blank or noted as "Not Available" according to the application guidelines.

Always check the latest guidelines and procedures from the official PAN application website or consult with a tax professional to ensure compliance with current regulations.
