05 June 2012 Take the example of shares held in demat form. The registered onwer is the depository(NSDL or CSDL). The name of depository is entered in the register of shareholders.

However, the beneficial owner is the demat holder.

Any income from such shares shall be the income of the beneficial owner and not the registered owner.
