13 November 2009 You visit website of cbec.gov.in under Excise in the Tariffs section you will see various chapters. Go the the chapters and for your item you will see the code atleast upto 6 digits. Usually if say chapter no. in excise of your item is 28 then code will start with 28.nn.nn.nn. The nn represents classifications and sub classifications in the chapter. Within 28 it will be still further classified and then sub classified. You give the code only till the level you need to give. The excise department classifies according to Harmonised System (HS) adopted by ITC Code.
