India has transitioned from service tax to Goods and Services Tax (GST) on July 1, 2017. Before GST, the service tax rate on transport services was 4.5%, including 0.15% cess. Invoices must mention the service tax amount separately, and payments are made through the CBEC-GST (Central Board of Excise and Customs) under the 'TRACES' system. Regular returns are required to report and pay the service tax collected.
Post-GST, the GST rate for transport services is 5% (without input tax credit) or 12% (with input tax credit), depending on the composition scheme or regular scheme. Invoices must mention the GST rate and amount separately, and payments and filings are made through the GST portal. To ensure GST compliance, businesses must register under GST, issue GST-compliant invoices, file returns, and maintain records. Consult a tax professional or GST consultant for tailored guidance and compliance with current tax laws.
