I am a retired university professor and in these days i am expecting again payment of certain arrears from my ex-institute. But the finance deptt/audit of the institute forcibly allow deduction of excess of TDS on each payment made. For example, last year they paid me 40% arrears, Rs 2.5 lakh and deducted IT @ 30%, i.e. about Rs 75000/-. Being retired although i might come under 20% slab maximally. Inspite of my repeated requests they have not deducted TDS as per admissable slab rate. Please advise how i should check this annomally in the action of this institute. It is unnecessary a severe harassment to a retired person. Thanks.

Sir.TDS deduction is the responsiblity of Payer, the rates decided based on the Income tax act, Since your TDS under 192 you have right to ask the calculation of tds and right to ask the calculation base, really your tax is in the 20% slab you can demand the deductor the same
