Can a Chartered Accountant in practice take up an assignment with an MNC as a consultant? However he/she would not be as an employee of the company but would work on a contract basis. Would this be against the Code of Professional Ethics?

Yes a Chartered Accountant in practice take up an assignment with an MNC as a consultant. But remember there are 2 pre-conditions:
1. You should not be on roll of the company for salary purpose.
2. Employee status == not allowed.
