14 July 2024 If the intimation under Section 143(1) shows a difference in gross total income but your original return resulted in nil tax payable, here’s what you should consider:

1. **Review the Intimation:**
- Carefully go through the intimation received from the Income Tax Department. Understand the details of why there is a difference in gross total income as per your return and as per their computation.

2. **Verify the Income Details:**
- Check if all sources of income, deductions, and exemptions were correctly reported in your original return. Ensure there were no errors or omissions that could have led to the difference in income.

3. **Assess Tax Liability Impact:**
- Determine if the difference in gross total income affects your tax liability. Since your original return showed nil tax payable, ensure that this remains the case after considering the revised computation.

4. **Consider the Need for a Revised Return:**
- If the difference in gross total income does not affect your tax liability (i.e., you still have nil tax payable), you may not necessarily need to file a revised return. In such cases, the difference could be due to computational adjustments by the tax department, which may not impact your final tax liability.

5. **Respond to the Intimation:**
- If you are confident that your original return was correct and there are no errors in reporting income or deductions, you can respond to the Income Tax Department stating your position. Provide any necessary explanations or documents to support your claim.

6. **Seek Professional Advice if Unsure:**
- If you are unsure about how to proceed or if the issue seems complex, it might be helpful to consult a tax advisor or Chartered Accountant. They can review the intimation and your original return to provide informed guidance on whether filing a revised return is necessary.

In conclusion, if the difference in gross total income does not affect your tax liability (nil tax payable remains unchanged), you may not need to file a revised return. Ensure to respond promptly and accurately to the Income Tax Department if you choose not to revise, providing any necessary clarifications. Always keep records of your communications for future reference.
