how to recongise the income in case of preference and equity dividend.please explain with examples

When the Dividend is declared by the Company.
Eg: Dividend for the FY 2011-12 is declared on May 5, 2012 ; In that case Dividend can be recoganised in FY 2012-13 not in the FY 2011-12.
