31 January 2014 I wants to remove my surname from Pan card, because my all other document don't have my surname in them. But pan card authority says surname cannot be removed because it is part of my pan card number. Can I remove my surname from pan card without changing my pan card number.

i.e. My Name is "Amit kumar" in my all documents including my passport, my pan card have "Amit Kumar Singh".

✅ Can You Remove Surname from PAN Card?

Yes, you can update or correct the name on your PAN card (including removing the surname), but your PAN number will remain the same.

🟢 Good news: The surname is not embedded in your PAN number — PAN numbers are alphanumeric and follow a logic, but they do not prevent name changes.
📝 Procedure to Remove Surname from PAN:

You need to file a PAN data correction / update request. Here's how:

1. Use Form for PAN Correction:
Visit NSDL e-Gov PAN Portal or UTIITSL PAN Portal.
Choose "Correction in existing PAN" option.
Enter your existing PAN number and correct the name to “Amit Kumar”.
2. Documentation Required:
Submit proof of identity and proof of name matching the corrected name (i.e., "Amit Kumar"):

Aadhaar Card
Passport
Voter ID
Driving License
Any other government-issued ID showing "Amit Kumar"
3. Additional Document:
If your old PAN shows “Amit Kumar Singh” and all other documents show “Amit Kumar,” you may be required to submit:

A name change affidavit, or
A gazette notification showing name change from “Amit Kumar Singh” to “Amit Kumar”.
