depends on what your business is. if you are into research, sale of proto-type shall also be included in operating income

one more thing.. is amortisation of design and development expense is an operating expense, if i am in a business of designig and developing machinery.

it is equivalent to depreciation and is considered an operating expense.

you need the assets to run the business...such expenses are covered as operating expenses. Thats the simplest explanation..
