15 March 2010 Mr X is an employee who had taken house building loan from y bank. Mr X is also paying throgh y bank mediclaim premium for which insurance company had issued a certificate like payment of insurance premium from y bank (A/c Mr X. My question is whether this payment will qualify deduction in section 80D? if so, how?

17 March 2010 What ever mediclaim paid by the assesee thorugh his cheque can be claimed u/s.80D.Not for others paid

18 March 2010 My dear Ramesh, section 80D is amended previously the criteria was "paid by him" specifically exclude payment of mediclaim by other mode. Now, many organization pays mediclaim insurance premium for the employee and the same is deducted from his salary or payment through third party etc is now allowable for this section 80 D(1) is redrafted which made the scope broader by deleating the word "paid by him". So, i think we should not be so much restricted in our approach just to disallow the deduction rather we must explore the strength in our approach at best favorable for the assessee.
