25 February 2011 Whether following payments are eligible for deduction under the head salaries

1.Medical Bill paid on behalf of dependant father(Senior Citizen) Amount incurred is Rs.75000/-

2.Family health insurance policy Rs.8000/- (80D)

2.Insurance premium paid on behalf of spouse, Insurance receipt in name of spouse only

please advise

25 February 2011 1. Direct deduction from salary is not allowed in all the 3 cases.
2. Any deduction , if any allowable, can be allowed from Gross Total Income only, which is arrived by adding up the Income from all the heads of Income applicable to the assesee.
3. If Bills are of medicines only and does not pertain to treatment expenditure in government hospital of one of the specified diseases U/s 80DDB, nothing will be allowed as deduction.
4. Family Health Insurance policy or Medi-Claim is allowable as deduction provided premium has been paid by cheque.
5. Insurance Premium, is if paid towards life Insurance Policy of spouse,and the sum assured in the policy is more than 5 times the premium amount , will be deductible U/s 80C.
