How to compute index value of property ?

Dear sir,
If an individual sells his ancestral property purchased on 1 Jan. 1978 by his father. How can he compute the index value of such property for the purpose of capital gain, as inflation index is available from the year of 1980.

Fair market value of the property as on 1/4/1981 has to be ascertained and then apply indexation.
