can u plz clarify me whether the filing of Return is must either
the "gross total income" exceeds the exemption limit or "Total income" (ie., gross total income after deducting eligible deductions).

22 February 2011 It is gross total income that too before giving effect to section 10A or 10B or 10BA of the IT Act,1961.

the wordings in Section 139(1)(b) are

".........if his total income or the total income........".

If we interpret the above section literally it does not conveys the gross total income.

can u plz elaborate.
