02 August 2025 Hi, we are a partnership firm. we want to use a trade name for our business separate from legal name. to add the same in GST do we need to submit any supporting document?? if any what? also, our legal name is Xx construction and we want to continue to use it invoices issued against works contract can we??

12 August 2025 1. Adding a Trade Name in GST
You can add a trade name (also called “business name” or “doing business as”) separate from the legal name.
No specific supporting document is required to add the trade name in GST portal.
You can update or add the trade name in the GST registration by filing Application for Amendment (Form REG-14) on the GST portal.
It is advisable to have some internal documentation or proof of usage (like letterhead, signboard, or advertisement) to support your trade name if asked.
2. Using Trade Name on Invoices
You can continue using your legal name (“Xx Construction”) on invoices if you prefer.
The GST rules allow invoices to mention either the legal name or trade name, but:
The GST registration number and legal name of the registered person must be clearly mentioned.
If you use the trade name, it should be clear that it relates to the registered legal entity.
