17 April 2014 Dear Sir,

can we consider maternal grand mother as dependent for claiming deduction under 80DDB?

17 April 2014 Hello there,
If an individual incurs any medical expense for any specified disease for himself or a dependant , the assessee shall be allowed deduction under this section for an amount equal to i) Actual amount incurred or ii) 40000/- or 60,000/-( in case of senior citizen) whichever is less

Here dependant has been defined as spouse, children, parents, brothers and sisters of the individual or any of them.

Hence Grandmother is not covered , you can transfer the amount to your father and ask him to claim deduction in his return.
