I have filed my ITR for A.Y. 2016-17 in 44AD. Authorities declared it as defective return on the grounds of non preparation of balance sheet and profit and loss. Under what circumstances it is mandatory to prepare books under 44AA while filing under 44AD?

If you are filing the return u/s 44AD no books need to be maintained and P&L and balance sheet need not be filed. There is some error in filing the return correct it and file it again. Choose no account case.

actually i can say both.... some clients are filing there return under itr 4 and some undet 4s... Now what response will i file for such notice of defective return..?

You have to correct the mistakes. No problem in filing ITR 4.

You have to choose no account case by declaring not less than 8% profit on turnover.
