08 October 2011 Thank you sir, but sir after uploading the return in xml sheet and on saving the return at the aces site, it shows the following error "Challan number mentioned does not exists". While the challan numbers are correctly mentioned. And if the return is directly submited without saving at the site, then no errors are generated. I can make out exactly why this happening. Sir Please if you can guide me in this matter.

02 August 2025 Got it, you’re dealing with an issue where after uploading the service tax return online, the system gives an error **"Challan number mentioned does not exist"** when you try to save the return on the ACES site — even though the challan numbers are correct. But if you submit directly without saving, no errors occur.

Here’s what’s probably happening and some tips to fix it:

### What’s going on?

* The **CBEC system cross-verifies** challan numbers against the data received from banks who collect the tax.
* If the challan number doesn’t appear in the bank’s data or there’s a mismatch in some details (like date, amount, or serial number), the system throws this error.
* Sometimes, if you upload the XML and try to save before the challan data is updated or fully synced, it may flag this error even if the numbers are correct.

### Possible reasons for the error:

1. **Challan number mismatch:** Even a small typo or format issue (like extra spaces, wrong case, missing leading zeros).
2. **Payment not yet updated in CBEC system:** Sometimes banks take a day or two to update challan info in the central system.
3. **Incorrect reporting of date or amount in XML:** The challan details in XML must exactly match what’s recorded by the bank.
4. **Multiple challans used, but details incomplete or out of sequence.**

### Suggestions:

* **Verify challan numbers carefully:** Check the serial numbers on the original challans exactly, including any leading zeros.
* **Check payment clearance:** Confirm with your bank or on the CBEC site that the payment has been accepted and challans updated.
* **Wait a day or two:** If the payment was recent, wait for system sync before uploading and saving.
* **Use the latest ACES version:** Sometimes older software versions have bugs that cause validation errors.
* **Cross-check XML fields:** Make sure the XML matches challan number, date, amount exactly.
* **Contact CBEC helpdesk:** If the challan is correctly paid and updated, they may need to help clear system issues.

If you want, you can share a sample (without sensitive data) of your XML challan section, and I can help you verify if it looks correct.
