Incase of shares Long term asset means which you held more than 12 months. if you held less than 12months that is short term capital asset. for other assets 36 months
Dividend which you received as a share holder of the company and company pays from the profit earned
Capital gain means which you getting on sale of share to other person on a price exceeds which you purchase
Dividend which you received as a share holder of the company and company pays from the profit earned

If dividend relates to preacquisition period then credit it to investment a/c otherwise charge it to p&l and capital gain i.e. Profit on sale of shares are debited to investment.
