pan declaration

This query is : Resolved

26 August 2016 i am living in a rented apartment and paying Rs 18k as rent. the flat owner is ask8ng for my pan details. he said he require it to file his IT return. as the rent income is above Rs. 10k, his CA is asking for tenant's pan. is there any such provision. as far as i know only tenant has to prove owner's pan details to claim HRA. please advise.

26 August 2016 there is no harm in giving PAN to your landlord....no issues.

27 August 2016 In Schedule HP of the Income tax return form a column is given wherein the landlord has to fill the PAN of the tenant, but it is optional.
But if the rent > 1 lac the tenant has to obtain the PAN of the landlord and to give it to the employer if HRA exemption is sought for.

27 August 2016 Providing Pan details is mandatory in the Lanlords Return if the Rent is more than 1lac p.a
