If you've inherited jewellery, understanding its tax implications is important. While generally considered exempt income, it's wise to have documentation. If you lack original invoices for very old items, you can create a list of the inherited items with their approximate current value, signed by the inheritor and two witnesses. This list, ideally on dated stamp paper and potentially notarised as an affidavit, can help support the inheritance in case of future tax enquiries.

No need for reporting in ITR. If you have inherited gold, you can show a copy of the original invoices or a copy of the gift deed, settlement deed or will. If there is no documentary evidence, tax authorities can consider the family customs, social status and so on for determining the source of gold.
