ITR filed with Tax due by clicking on "Pay later"

This query is : Resolved

Quick Summary
This discussion addresses concerns after filing an Income Tax Return (ITR) with a 'Pay Later' option for tax due. The user paid the tax a day after filing, but the challan hasn't updated on the portal after seven days. They are seeking clarification on challan updates, the process for updating them, and whether a revised return is necessary, especially since they only later learned that filing without immediate payment might be considered defective. Expert advice suggests waiting for communication from the CPC and that filing a revised return is not currently mandatory, with a deadline of March 31, 2023, for AY 2022-23.

21 July 2022 I had recently filed ITR for AY22-23 with a total Tax due of around INR 20K by clicking on "Pay later". In fact, I was not factually aware that this may lead to default in return, and wanted to recheck the due amount before payment. This due Tax amount of INR 20K was then later paid by me a day later after filing of ITR. The challan has still not got updated in the income tax e-portal, as of now (about 7 days post filing return)

My questions are:-

1) Will the challan details get updated in the income tax portal against my PAN and generally how long does it take for this to happen.

2) Is there any procedure to update my challan post ITR filing.

2) Do I need to file revised return or it is not needed. There is no mistake in ITR, only it was filed with due Tax amount, which has been paid a day after filing return.

Thanks indeed for all your help,

21 July 2022 1. This time its uncertain. Otherwise it used to take maximum week's time.
2. No, wait till any communication from CPC.
3. Even if you wish to file revised return, wait till the SAT paid challan gets uploaded to the system.

21 July 2022 Thanks, Sir for your valuable expert advice, as always-

Regarding point 3), I would be grateful if you could clarify.

Is it necessary to file revised return, or it is not needed ?

Also, I fail to understand why the "pay later" option is there in e-portal, if any return filed without payment of "due taxes" may get treated as a defective return, which I only found out later after reading some articles over the web-site.

Thanks, once again.

21 July 2022 As such not required. But if at all you wish....
System is not fully functional that is why such gimmicks.

21 July 2022 Thanks indeed Sir. Your knowledge is indeed superb and you are doing a great service to ordinary citizens like us, still trying to get a knack of our IT systems.

21 July 2022 That's My Pleasure..

22 July 2022 Sir, I just need to know one point:

As the paid challan has still not got updated on the income tax portal and also I cannot find challan status details on the NSDL site, I am thinking of filing revised return and updating the paid challan details manually in the ITR form during refiling. Please let me know-
1) What is the last date for refiling. Does it need to be filed before 31/07/2022 ?
2) You have already confirmed earlier that refiling is not mandatory. Is my understanding correct ?

Thanks and much appreciated.

Thanks and Regards,

22 July 2022 1. Last date for filing revised return is 31.03.2023. (For AY 2022-23)
2. Yes, not necessary as of now. Wait for any communication from CPC.
