I had not filed the returns in the AY2010-11 and recently got a notice from Compliance Management Cell regarding that.
There was a little bit of tax (I had changed jobs, and both employers applied the deductions available) which I paid along with the interest last week at the bank.
However when I tried to file now online it says I can't file.
Is there a remedy available? Is it OK if I select "section 142" on the calculation spreadsheet, generate the XML with that and upload it?

you cant choose 142 unless notice is actually issued by the department. what you need to do is to reply to the notice stating that the return is under preparation and then approach jurisdictional AO and file manual return after paying due taxes alongwith interest.

Will they accept manual returns? what is the procedure in this case? can I petition them to issues me a 142 notice?
In fact I have to file for two years (AY10-11 and AY11-12) and while in the first year there was some tax due on me, in the second year there is a heavy return (more than nullifies the taxes+interest of the first year)
All of my income is from salary, bank interest and stock market trades (STT paid)

yes they do accept such returns. yes you can request AO to issue 142(1) notice. and if there is any refund due, they will have to refund.
as per your advice I replied to the notice and later filed the returns. With some hesitation (and on the urging of a tax officer known to one of my family friends) the guy t the counter accepted the return.
my question is this - what is the legal validity of this return; can they invalidate it AFTER they have accepted it?
Also in case they issue a notice under section 142 now, will the date of filing deemed the date of actual filing or the date after the 142 notice?
