This discussion addresses the deduction of housing loan interest and principal for a jointly held loan. The core question is whether one spouse, whose income is not taxable, can claim 100% of the deduction even if the loan was split 50% previously. The consensus is that deductions must be claimed in the same proportion as the loan is shared, and claiming 100% by one spouse when the loan is joint is not permissible.
