29 August 2024 I'm trying to set a store on ecommerce platforms for selling keychains made of materials including but not limited to wooden beads, different types of beading materials like macrame, plastic lacing crochet elastic string and metal keyring. Which trademark class/classes should I go for? Does the class change based on the materials used orn is it common across all handmade / handicraft items. Please help.

12 August 2025 Hey! For your handmade keychains and related craft items, trademark classification depends mostly on the **type of goods** rather than the materials. Here's how it generally works:

---

### Trademark Class for Handmade Keychains:

* **Class 20** — This class includes **handicraft goods made of wood, cork, reed, cane, wicker, horn, bone, ivory, whalebone, shell, amber, mother-of-pearl, meerschaum and substitutes for all these materials**, or plastics.

* Keychains made of wood, plastic, macrame, crochet strings etc., typically fall under this class.

* **Class 26** — Includes **lace, embroidery, ribbons and braid; buttons, hooks and eyes, pins and needles; artificial flowers**.

* If your products involve a lot of **beading, lacing, crochet, or textile work**, this class may also be relevant.

* **Class 14** — Jewelry, including **fashion jewelry or trinkets** which might cover metal keyrings if considered jewelry.

---

### So for your keychains (wooden beads, macrame, plastic lacing, metal keyrings):

| Class Number | Description | Applicability |
| ------------ | ------------------------------------------------ | -------------------------------------- |
| 20 | Handicraft goods, wood, plastic items | Wooden beads, plastic parts, keychains |
| 26 | Textile accessories like lace, embroidery, beads | Macrame, crochet, beading materials |
| 14 | Jewelry, trinkets | Metal parts considered as jewelry |

---

### Does material affect the class?

* **Not exactly.**
* Trademark classes are defined by **product type and use**, not strictly by material.
* Since your product is a **keychain (a craft/accessory)** combining different materials, you may consider covering all relevant classes (20 and 26 primarily) to avoid future conflicts.

---

### Recommendation:

* File in **Class 20** for the overall handicraft keychain.
* Add **Class 26** if textile/crochet/beading is a major part of your product.
* Optionally **Class 14** if your keychains are marketed as jewelry/trinkets.

---

If you want, I can help draft a sample trademark application description based on your products. Need that?
