20 January 2011 I have TAN No. Is it compulsory to file quarterly e-TDS returns even though I don't have any payments attracting TDS?

20 January 2011 NIL TDS return is not compulsory.

20 January 2011 I have received a notice from IT Department requiring me to file Quarterly E-TDS statements from FY 2006-07 to 2010-11. I have stopped my business in 2004 itself. After that I had only FD Interest income and no other income. Will I be penalised for not filing the returns?

20 January 2011 No penalty. Only inform the department about the facts in your reply against their notice.

20 January 2011 I also want to surrender that TAN No. Can I do so? Because I dont want to receive any such notices in future.

20 January 2011 Mention the same in your letter that you want to surrender the TAN.
