17 March 2010 HI,

One of my collegue have given me only the Rent agreement to claim the exemption of HRA

I want to know whether Rent reciept is required or not

OR

i can accept the Rent agreement as payment of rent and allow Exemption

kindly advice

17 March 2010 There is no legal requirement as such. But you should have some proof of payment.

At the time of Assessment AO may ask you for the proof of payment.
so you must have rent reciept or copy of cheque A/c payee and photocopy of bank statement as a proof of payment along with rent agreement.

Solution:- if he is not giving you reciept then prepare a reciept manual or in computer which includes the details of payment with date and put one ruppee revenue stamp on it and take the signature of the recipient. It will be rent reciept.
