Demand under section 143 (1a)

Assesse has received reminder notice for demand with respect to A.Y. 2001- 02. Assessee has not received any earlier demand notice & he is dead.
What is the step should the legal heir take in response to the demand notice. The notice specifies to pay demand with interest under section 220(2).
kindly guide the necessary steps.

Reply to the reminder notice to the jurisdictional AO by saying that the assessee is dead and he did not receive any notice for outstanding demand earlier. Ask for intimation u/s 143(1) as to how the demand has been created.
