16 December 2014 Sir,

A bank officer died on 17/12/2012.His wife , a Govt servant filed return as a legal heir on the advise of an auditor for AY 2012-13 and 2013-2014.Now she received a notice ( in the name of the deceased) to submit evidence as to the filing of return for AY 2014-2015 before 18/12 /2014.
I am of the opinion that a letter along with a copy of death certificate stating the reason for non filing would be sufficient.
Experts kindly advise.

16 December 2014 You are right. No need to file the return.The reply should be given, preferably under REGD AD. Once you attach the DEATH certificate, no need to mention even any reason for NON filing.
