Ao asking information for 2010 2011 without quoting any sect

13 September 2014 Mr. X received a letter from AO (no mention of section under which it is issued) asking for certain information for FY2010-2011 with an intention to issue a notice u/s148 if the information is not supplied within 10 days. My view is that it is just a fishing inquiry and AO is collecting information based on which notice u/s 148 can be issued. Please share your valuable opinion on whether reply should be given to such a notice?

15 September 2014 if the reasons for 148 notice are not provided therein, before providing any information from your side, ask AO to furnish reasons for issue of the notice. Since AO has not issued 148 notice, a fishing attempt should end at this stage.

15 September 2014 yes correct guidance given else the ao would have mentioned the section in it
