Gud aftn experts,
I had a small doubt regarding vat and wct, when vat is shown separately in the invoice can we deduct wct on total value including vat??

It means the contractor already paid the tax in the form of vat and again we are paying tax to govt in the form of wct.Does it amount to double taxation??

Great question! Here’s how it works: Can WCT be deducted on total value including VAT? Yes, legally WCT is calculated on the total contract value including VAT if VAT is shown separately in the invoice. So, you first pay VAT on materials, then WCT on the gross contract value (which may include VAT). Does this lead to double taxation? In effect, yes, because: VAT is paid on the sale of goods/materials used in the contract. WCT is a tax on the entire works contract, including materials and labor, so VAT amount becomes part of the taxable base for WCT. However, WCT is a substitute to VAT and sales tax on works contract, meant to be a consolidated tax on the contract value. But since VAT is charged on material separately and shown explicitly, WCT on the full value including VAT means VAT gets “taxed again” under WCT. Why does this happen? VAT is a state-level tax on sale of goods. WCT is a state-level tax on works contract service, covering supply of goods + service. The legal framework did not always fully avoid this overlap, so double taxation was common criticism. Any relief? Some states have abatement provisions or exemptions to reduce cascading. Under GST, this issue has largely been resolved by a single tax on supplies (goods + services together). Summary: Tax Charged On Effect VAT Material sold Paid on materials WCT Full contract value (incl VAT) Leads to “tax on tax” effect
