This query is : Resolved

28 September 2014 I am filling revised tds return for Fy12-13 Q1_26Q, Here while generating fvu file, I found errors which is ask to fill AIN no. if Deductor if S State Govt. What is AIN No. I don't have that's why when I try to fil 00000 in the AIN column then generate return it again says invalid digits...

06 October 2014 AIN is an unique "Account Information Identification Number" allotted to each govt deductor.

If the status is S then AIn is compulsory.

11 February 2015 Nikhil Kaushik ji, what is the procedure to file AIN no online....or is there any hint through which I can fill registration form easily. becoz it ask DETAILS OF PAO/DTO/CDDO (AO) which I don't have.

11 February 2015 you need to ask for these details from the deductor organization.

11 February 2015 I have all the details becoz I file tds return. Acutally I received notice u/s 234E 200 per day, We are a Govt Deductor but Department charge fine for late filling equal to Private sector.I don't have details of PAO/DTO/CDDO (AO). We deduct tds on 24Q & 26Q & deposit to Bank through bank challan. Customer Care from traces asked me to get 24G(don't know), Ain No. then we will be treated as Govt Deductor. When I try to online file AIN no through TIn - Nsdl site it ask details already provided to you.

03 August 2025 Here’s a clear explanation about **AIN No.** and its relevance in filing TDS returns:

---

### What is AIN No.?

* **AIN** stands for **Account Information Number**.
* It is a **unique 8-digit number** allotted by the Income Tax Department to **Government Deductors**.
* It identifies the **PAO (Pay and Accounts Office), DTO (Drawing and Disbursing Officer), or CDDO (Central Designated Disbursing Officer)** responsible for the TDS deductions and payments made by government departments.

---

### Why is AIN No. Used in TDS Return Software?

* When filing **TDS returns** for government deductors (status code “S”), the **AIN No. is mandatory**.
* It helps the Income Tax Department **identify the exact government office** responsible for deducting and depositing TDS.
* Without a valid AIN, the TDS return file will **not be accepted** by the Income Tax Department (error in FVU file).

---

### How to Get AIN No.?

* AIN is allotted by the Income Tax Department when the government department registers as a deductor.
* The government deductor needs to provide details of the **PAO/DTO/CDDO (AO)** during registration.
* Usually, the **finance or accounts section** of the government office will have this number.
* If you don’t have it, you must **contact the concerned government department or the Income Tax TDS helpdesk** for assistance.

---

### What if You Don’t Have AIN No.?

* You **cannot file TDS returns as a government deductor** without a valid AIN.
* Filing as a private deductor or entering dummy AIN (like 00000000) will cause the return to be **rejected**.
* The Income Tax Department may also levy **penalties (like section 234E penalty of ₹200 per day)** for late or incorrect filing.

---

### Summary:

| Aspect | Details |
| --------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------- |
| What is AIN | Unique 8-digit Account Information Number for govt deductors |
| Who needs AIN | Government deductors (status “S”) |
| Purpose | Identify PAO/DTO/CDDO responsible for TDS deduction & deposit |
| Obtaining AIN | From Income Tax Dept or govt department’s finance section |
| Consequence of no AIN | TDS returns rejected; penalties may apply |

If you want, I can help guide you on contacting the right authorities or draft a request letter for obtaining your AIN!
