As per the VAT regime in most Indian states prior to the implementation of GST in July 2017, mobile phones, regardless of their price, were generally taxed at the standard VAT rate, which was: 12.5% VAT — applicable across all price ranges, including phones below ₹10,000. 🔍 Clarification: There was no separate lower VAT rate for mobile phones priced under ₹10,000. The confusion may have arisen due to: Different tax slabs for accessories or feature phones in earlier years in certain states. Local trade practices may have varied, but legally, mobile phones typically fell under the 12.5% VAT slab. ✅ Summary: 📱 Mobile phone VAT rate (under pre-GST VAT): 12.5% 💰 Applies to all price ranges, including < ₹10,000 💡 Some states might have treated accessories or feature phones differently, but mobile handsets generally had no price-based differential VAT.
