02 August 2025 Great question!

**VAT and Sales Tax are basically two terms for similar taxes but under different systems:**

* **Sales Tax:** The older tax system levied on the sale of goods by the states.
* **VAT (Value Added Tax):** A more modern tax system that replaced sales tax in most states in India since around 2005-2007. VAT is levied on the value added at each stage of sale.

---

### So, can both VAT and sales tax be charged on a single bill?

**No, generally not.**

* If a state has implemented VAT, sales tax as a separate tax does **not** apply anymore on the same goods. You only charge VAT.
* Some states may still use the term "Sales Tax" for certain goods or services (or under CST for interstate sales), but VAT and sales tax on the same transaction together is not allowed.

---

### Exceptions / Special Cases:

* **CST (Central Sales Tax):** This is applicable on interstate sales and is separate from VAT. So, on one bill, you could have VAT (for intrastate sales) or CST (for interstate sales), but not both on the same sale.
* **Transition period:** Some older bills during transition might have shown both, but now it’s either VAT or CST.

---

### Summary:

* **For intra-state sales:** You charge **VAT only** (no separate sales tax).
* **For inter-state sales:** You charge **CST** (not VAT).
