Surrendering a duplicate PAN can be tricky because the system doesn't have a straightforward "surrender PAN" option online. Here’s what you can do:
### Steps to handle duplicate PAN application and surrender:
1. **Immediately contact NSDL/TIN Helpdesk:**
* Call or email NSDL TIN Helpdesk ([https://tin.tin.nsdl.com](https://tin.tin.nsdl.com)) quoting your **acknowledgment number**. * Request cancellation of the duplicate PAN application before processing completes.
2. **Write a formal request letter:**
* Address it to the **Assessing Officer (AO)** of your PAN jurisdiction. * Explain the mistake of applying duplicate PAN and request to treat the new application as cancelled. * Attach a copy of acknowledgment receipt, your existing PAN card, and any communication you have had with NSDL.
3. **File a PAN Correction Request:**
* If the duplicate PAN gets processed, apply for **PAN correction** (Form 49A) online to merge or correct details. * Mention the existing PAN to avoid multiple PANs.
4. **If online portal is down:**
* Visit the nearest **PAN facilitation center** or NSDL TIN center in person. * Submit your request letter and documents for cancellation or correction.
5. **Follow up:**
* Keep checking your PAN status via the NSDL website. * Keep a record of all communications for future reference.
---
### Important Notes:
* There’s **no direct online “surrender PAN” form**. * The Income Tax Department allows **only one PAN per person**. * The duplicate PAN will be invalidated once the issue is resolved. * Be proactive and keep following up with NSDL & AO.

If you want, I can help draft the formal request letter/email to the AO or NSDL for cancellation. Just say the word!
