(GIVING ANSWER ASSUMING ROLE OF CHATERED ACCOUNTANT)generally a role of accountant in a manufacturing company is in accounting department OR internal audit department. In accounts department accountant may be required to finalise the balancesheet

"Limiting" answer to Role of "Accountant" in the Manufacturing Concern :

He is supposed to -
.
1. Take care of perfect day to day accounting
.
2. Preparation of details for :
.
i. Excise Returns
.
ii. TDS Returns
.
iii. Calculation of Advance Tax
.
iv. Preparation of Salary Sheets
.
v. Preparation of Vouchers
.
vi. Interest calculations
.
vii. Providing Depreciation as per the Company Law.
.
viii. Preparation of Scrutiny Details asked by the Income-Tax Department
.
ix. Providing Sundry Debtors position to the company for collection purpose.
.
x. Have a check over leakage of income i.e. expenses which are made without any authority.
.
and last but not the least
xi. Taking his own salary in time.
.
(Don't miss it; because he is always too busy in accounting that he does not find enough time to claim his own entitlement).

The above list is not exhaustive....more he has to do like Reconciliation of Bank Statement etc.
