Hi CA Laxmi Mittal, thanks for sharing the issue. Here’s a step-by-step guide and some troubleshooting tips related to your problems with TAN registration/login on TRACES and TDS return filing:
1. Issue with TAN login / Updating Contact Details on TRACES TRACES portal (https://www.tdscpc.gov.in/) sometimes has technical glitches, especially with dropdowns like PIN code, Post Office, Area. If the dropdowns under Contact Details are not loading or auto-filling, it could be due to: Browser compatibility issues (try clearing cache/cookies or using another browser like Chrome/Firefox). Temporary server-side issues at NSDL/TRACES. What to do:
Try accessing TRACES portal during off-peak hours. Use an updated browser and clear cache. If the issue persists, use the Helpdesk or call NSDL helpline: NSDL TAN/TDS Helpdesk Or email: helpdesk@tdscpc.gov.in 2. Registering a new TAN if no returns have been filed TAN (Tax Deduction Account Number) is issued by NSDL (TAN facilitation center). You cannot "register" a new TAN if you already have one under the same PAN and details. If TAN exists but returns are not filed, you can: Use the existing TAN and file TDS returns. If TAN is lost or details mismatch, you can apply for a new TAN via NSDL site: https://www.tin-nsdl.com/ 3. Filing First TDS Return without TAN login on TRACES You don’t necessarily need TRACES login to file TDS return. You can file TDS returns directly through NSDL TIN website (https://www.tin-nsdl.com/). For filing TDS returns, you need the BSR Code and Challan Number of the TDS payment. 4. How to get BSR Code and Challan Number These details are available on the challan receipt provided by the bank at the time of payment. If you have lost the challan receipt, try the following: Contact the bank where TDS was deposited; they can provide BSR code and challan number. Use Form 26AS (available on the TRACES portal or Income Tax e-filing portal) which shows TDS credited and related challan details. If you have not filed any returns or registered on TRACES, you can still access Form 26AS via the Income Tax e-filing portal: Log in at https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal Navigate to 'My Account' → 'View Form 26AS' Download Form 26AS, which shows challan details including BSR code and challan number.
