Hi, I want to start a new business of vegetables and food grain as retailer/distributor (i.e such as big basket etc). Do i need to get my self registered with any authorities? Please help.
You would need to get a bunch of approvals for starting the business. Perhaps the most important of them would be to get the food license under FSSAI regulations and the Trade License. Please check the below link for information about registration under FSSAI
Apart from that, PAN. TAN, VAT, Service Tax Registration would be necessary to begin with. You might want to form a company for which you would need to register a company with ROC.

I dont want to register as a company. So no separate pan is required. Further why TAN and service tax registration is required to begin with?

Hey! Here’s a clear answer for your vegetable and food grain business registration queries:
1. Do you need to register your vegetable and food grain business? If your turnover exceeds the GST threshold (Rs. 20 lakh in most states, Rs. 10 lakh in some special category states), then GST registration is mandatory. If your turnover is below the threshold, you are not required to register under GST, but you can do so voluntarily. Vegetables and food grains are generally exempt from GST or have very low GST rates, but registration may still be required based on your overall turnover. 2. Do you need to register as a company? No, you do not have to register as a company. You can operate as a proprietorship, partnership, or any other form of business without registering as a company. PAN card in your name or firm’s PAN (if partnership) is sufficient for tax purposes. 3. What about TAN and Service Tax registration? TAN (Tax Deduction Account Number) is required if you are responsible for deducting tax at source (TDS) on payments like salary, contract payments, rent, etc. If you are not deducting TDS, you do not need TAN. Service Tax registration is obsolete after GST was introduced in July 2017. You don’t need Service Tax registration anymore.
