Payment of Tax on Demand U/S 143(1)

An Assessee has got an Intimation U/S 143(1) & where IT Department has Demanded a certain amount as Interest from that assessee - under the Income Tax Intimation a Number called DEMAND IDENTIFICATION NUMBER is mentioned & such amount is to be paid in reference to that Number, Now if tax is to be paid through online payment from NSDL, there is no such provision for mentioning of such number as reference to such payment - then how to pay such amount which can track such payment in reference to that DEMAND IDENTIFICATION NUMBER.

25 July 2011 Mr.Debashis Mandal, You need not quote the demand identification number. Make payment by just selecting Regular assessment tax. They will track payment using the PAN number and the respective assessment year we are selecting while making the e-payment.

25 July 2011 You have to pay the amount through 280 Challan and check the box as Tax on regular Assessment for the year to which the demand relates.

U need not mention the Demand identification number there, cause there is no such provision available. What U could do is pay the tax online and reply to the intimation giving the particulars of the amount paid and the challan details and give the reference of the Demand identification number in the correspondence. This will take care of the issue at hand.
