My mother is a housewife but has no separate income other than interest from FD (TDS by bank has been deducted) and some equity transactions done in her name. However, the total income just amounts a little over Rs 40K. Since the income was not above 2L, she has not filed any tax return.
Last week she has received an intimation from IT Dept regarding clarification for non-compliance for filing of IT return for AY 2013-14.
Does she now has to file IT Return and how to respond to the IT Dept

File reply showing no return is filed because income was below taxable limit. Also mention that mother has only interest income on which TDS has been deducted by bank. However you should have filed her return since TDS has been deducted and income was below taxable limit therefore refund could have been generated. You may still file return for AY 2013-14 till 31.03.2015.
