Quick Summary

If an individual passes away, their legal heir or representative can file their Income Tax return for the relevant assessment year. Income earned by the deceased, such as interest on Fixed Deposits, does not automatically get clubbed with their spouse's income. It's mandatory to file a return if the deceased's total income exceeds the basic exemption limit.

06 October 2021 Assessee expired in Oct 2020. She has income from Interest on F D for f y 20-21.

My question is Can her return be filed for A Y 21-22 or the income will be clubbed in her husbands income ?

06 October 2021 The return for AY 21-22 should be filed by representative assessee i.e. Legal heir...
The income doesn't get clubbed with that of her husband, but in the name of any nominee only after change in the name of FD, that may be her husband.

06 October 2021 For deceased assessee should we inform income tax departmnt that returns will not be filed in the event of death ?
If yes whether online and manual submission is required

06 October 2021 If the aggregate income is above the basic exemption limit, it is mandatory to file its return, no question of any information.
And if that is below the limit, you may not file return, let TDS, if at all deducted, gets lapsed.
