Is there a differnce b/w investment bank and merchant bank?

19 August 2008 Is there any technical difference between a merchant bank and an investment bank firm? Can these two words be used interchangably?

20 August 2008 Investment banks help companies and governments raise money by issuing and selling securities
in the capital markets (both equity and debt), as well as providing advice on transactions
such as mergers and acquisitions.

In banking, a merchant bank is a financial institution primarily engaged in international
finance and long-term loans for multinational corporations and governments.[1] It can also
be used to describe the private equity activities of banking
