How many prev years info can be asked by it dept

17 January 2014 Dear all I want to know how many years information can be sought by Income Tax dept!!! Will there be any difference if the same is done after search and seizure.

18 January 2014 well including search and seizure as such the information required is only for past six years preceding the current assessment year.

However, given that the reassessment proceedings can now be initiated for upto past 16 years incase of income escaping assessment is in relation to foreign income, AO may ask for information for past 16 years (in case of reassessment).
